With young talent valuing experiences and choosing where to live first, the Smith OEDC showcases how West Virginia has an unparalleled quality of life that provides the ability to live an outdoor lifestyle while still having a fulfilling career.

Our launching point for this work is a remote worker incentive and retention program, Ascend WV.

Emphasizing community, purpose, and the outdoors, Ascend WV is designed to support remote workers and their families as they relocate to West Virginia in pursuit of high quality of life and an outdoor-driven lifestyle. A collaboration between the West Virginia Department of Tourism and West Virginia University, communities within Morgantown, Lewisburg, and Shepherdstown include numerous benefits:

  • $12,000 financial incentive;
  • Free Outdoor Recreation Package and free outdoor equipment rentals for members;
  • Professional advancement through remote work certifications from WVU and access to the university's entrepreneurship ecosystem; and
  • Social programming and community building via networking and outdoor adventures.

WVU’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research completed an analysis for the first three locations of the program that shows significant economic impact for the state and creation of new businesses and jobs.

Paris Winfrey

Morgantown Experience Coordinator

Paris Winfrey is the Morgantown Experience Coordinator for Ascend WV. Paris grew up in Fairmont, WV and attended West Virginia University as an undergraduate marketing student before moving to Thailand to work as a program coordinator for Outpour Movement, where he developed and delivered various educational and community focused programs. Paris is used to getting second glances now that he’s back in Morgantown–you may have seen him in a few iconic “Let’s Go” photos featured around WVU. His passion for adventure and charismatic energy makes the perfect match for his role as Morgantown Program Coordinator for Ascend WV, where he will guide participants through all that West Virginia has to offer. Outside of work (and occasionally during), you can find Paris rock climbing, hiking, and mountain biking. He’s also a fantastic singer–he WON Mountaineer Idol in 2012!
