Celebrating Community Champions
The journey to advance the outdoor economy in West Virginia is a collective effort, one that a single organization or institution cannot achieve. The true power lies in the collaborative spirit of our excellent partners, visionaries, and champions spread across the state. This month, we're thrilled to spotlight those making a significant impact on the ground.

Trailblazers at Cacapon State Park
In our inaugural "Community Champions" segment, we celebrate the Cacapon State Park
trails project and the dedicated volunteers who have passionately championed this
vision for years. Cacapon State Park Trails already boast an outstanding reputation
for their variety, quality, and exciting developments underway. With
a diverse trail system, upscale lodging, dining options, and an array of park activities,
Cacapon State Park is on track to becoming one of the premier family-friendly mountain
biking destinations in the Mid-Atlantic.
Meet Mark Hoyle: The Heart Behind the Trails
To give us an insider's perspective on the magic happening at Cacapon, we spoke with Mark Hoyle. You've likely seen Mark's friendly face if you've attended any NICA and Enduro events or trail workdays at the park.
Mark relocated to the area in 2003 from Atlanta, where he was deeply involved in local trail projects. Adjusting to the new terrain and its technical challenges took time, but with guidance from local riders, Mark soon fell in love with the park's rock features. By day, Mark is a seasoned marketing guru supporting various recognizable brands, but his heart belongs to the woods and rivers that continually call him outside.
Lessons in Collaboration and Vision
"Collaboration is key," Mark emphasizes. The success at Cacapon has hinged on partnerships with the Cacapon State Park Foundation, where Mark now serves on the board. This non-profit friends organization and the unwavering support from State Park leaders Scott Fortney and Kelly Smith have been instrumental. On the ground, Eric Fitzpatrick ensures the trails are in top-notch condition. The Morgan County Commission, led by Joel Tuttle, has also been phenomenal supporters.
When asked to share advice for those embarking on similar projects, Mark's message is clear: "Be persistent, think big, and involve everyone in the community."
Be persistent, think big, and involve everyone in the community.
